An odd phenomenon occurs just as the spring season is drawing to a close and summer rears its head around the corner. Gym memberships skyrocket and hoards of people flock to the gym in an effort to get those six-pack abs they have always dreamed of ready for the beach.
‘This year is different from the last 6 years,’ you say to yourself. You have that little bit of extra drive and motivation. The first week in the gym you are on fire and feel great. You can already feel your biceps growing and your waistline shrinking thanks to the protein shakes you are now taking.
The second week starts off great – and then you have a minor hiccup and miss one workout. It’s only one workout, what harm could it possibly do? As the third week comes around you still feel you are going strong. But, the results are not happening as fast as you would like. Suddenly, your motivation does a funny thing and starts to dwindle. By the fifth week you are regularly missing workouts, and sure enough, before two months have even flown by, you quit. No abs or lean body for this summer again.
Why is this scenario all too common? Let me put it to you this way. Would you walk into an exam at university or college unprepared and expect to get great grades? Of course not. You would need to devote time to study the exam content and prepare your mind in order to do that. So do you think simply showing up at the gym is going to get you that great set of six-pack abs without any preparation or well-thought-out plan? Hell, no! If it was that easy, don’t you think the majority of people at the beach would have bulging biceps and ripped six-pack abs?
I am telling you now straight out: if you don’t have a sound diet, cardio, and weight training program in place you will NEVER get the ‘ripped’ look. As I have said before, if you don’t have a plan before you hit the gym, you are planning to fail. Do you think the guys that are ultra-lean and have ‘speed bump’–like abs look like that by accident?
Getting very lean is not a quick process. Depending on your body fat levels it will take between 8 and 16 weeks of incorporating and being consistent with proper nutrition, weight training and cardio, so discipline and motivation are essential.
I remember the first time I committed to getting a set of six-pack abs. I had planned a holiday to Thailand and said to myself, ‘I will just put an effort in for 10 weeks from now until the holiday and see where that gets me.’ I was amazed at how being consistent for once with my training, cardio and nutrition could significantly transform my body. So to help you, I suggest setting a date or a short-term goal for an occasion. This will create a sense of urgency and will help keep you focused and motivated. Once you have set a short-term goal we can move on the next and probably most important first step – your diet.
