The Importance of Rest and Recuperation

One aspect that is constantly overlooked by all beginners is the importance of adequate rest and recovery. In order for your muscles to repair and grow, you need to rest them.

Recovery is one of the key components of muscle growth. It goes without saying that your nutritional plan is very important to the recovery and repair process of your damaged muscles. However, it is also important to consider the frequency with which you train each body part. More is not better when it comes to weight training.

Muscle growth does not occur in the gym: it occurs in the kitchen and when resting. The gym is only the stimulus for this growth.

When your muscles are in the recovery period they are growing stronger so they can adapt to the heavy weight that is being thrown at them. Muscle breakdown will occur if you impede the recovery process – your strength and energy levels will decrease and that will lead to a lack of motivation. Over-training your muscles can also lead to a decrease in your immune system’s strength.

As mentioned earlier, muscles require at least 5–7 days for them to recuperate fully, so I recommend training each body part only once per week – and yes, this includes your abdominals. This is a sure way to guarantee that you are giving your muscles adequate rest and also giving them enough time to recuperate and grow.
