How To Do Dumbbell Side Lateral Raises

This is an isolation movement that targets the deltoids (lateral). Primary muscles used in this exercise are the lateral deltoids. Secondary muscles used in this exercise are the traps and forearms.

To perform dumbbell side laterals grip a dumbbell in each hand and hold them in front of your waist palms facing each other. With your elbows slightly bent, raise the dumbbells by your side with a forceful movement slightly higher than shoulder height. At the top of the movement your thumb should be below your pinkie finger. Control the weight back down to the starting position in a slower manner.

Do not be too stiff and rigid during the movement. Use your body's natural momentum as you move the weight. Being too stiff will cause you to move against your body's natural mechanics.
