How To Do Barbell/Dumbbell Shrugs

This is a movement that targets the trapezius (traps for short) and can be performed with either a barbell or dumbbells. Primary muscles used in this exercise are the traps. Secondary muscles used in this exercise are the deltoids, upper back and forearms.

To perform barbell shrugs grip the barbell a little wider than shoulder width apart. With the barbell held closely in front of your waist lift the weight upwards by shrugging your shoulders. Lower the weight down in a controlled slower manner. DO NOT rotate your shoulders when doing shrugs. You should just use an up and down movement as rotating your shoulders could lead to serious shoulder injuries.
